Why We Exist

Too many young people are growing up with incredible potential but limited opportunities.
  • Not because they lack talent.
  • Not because they lack ambition.
  • Not because they lack dreams.
  • But because they lack access.
Across Durham Region, many youth face barriers related to poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, social isolation, limited recreation opportunities, and a lack of accessible mentorship and leadership development. We created Limitless Futures to change that.
We exist to remove barriers and create opportunities so that every young person can experience belonging, discover purpose, and build a future filled with possibility. Because we believe potential is everywhere. Opportunity should be too.

WHY DURHAM?

The Need Is Real. The Support Gap Is Growing.

Many people assume Durham Region is well-resourced simply because it is suburban. The reality is far more complex.
While Toronto’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIAs) receive targeted investments to address poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and community wellbeing, many Durham youth face similar challenges without comparable access to community-based supports.

1 in 6 Children Live in Poverty

Approximately 16.7% of children in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area live in poverty.

18% Youth Unemployment

Youth unemployment has averaged nearly 18% over the last decade, limiting opportunities and long-term economic mobility.

Rising Cost of Living

Housing and rental costs continue to increase, creating additional stress for families and young people.

Growing Barriers to Opportunity

Many youth face challenges accessing mentorship, transportation, recreation, arts programming, leadership development, and affordable food.

As families are increasingly pushed east by Toronto’s housing market, Durham youth are experiencing many of the same pressures found in larger urban centres—without the same level of community investment.
The need is significant. It’s simply less visible.

THE GAP WE'RE FILLING

Comparable Need. Fewer Opportunities.

While Toronto’s highest-need neighbourhoods benefit from place-based youth investments, Durham’s support system remains fragmented.
Young people often encounter:
  • Limited access to free extracurricular opportunities
  • Transportation barriers between municipalities
  • Long waitlists and costly fee-for-service programs
  • Fewer mentorship and leadership development pathways
  • Growing food insecurity and mental health challenges
  • Reduced access to arts, sports, and community-building programs
We believe where a young person lives should never determine the opportunities available to them.
